How to read a Dodge VIN (position by position)

Every Dodge built for North America since 1981 carries a 17-character VIN. The first three characters are the WMI: NHTSA's vPIC lists 44 WMIs used on Dodge vehicles, such as 1B3, 1B4 and 1B5.

Dodge WMI codes

Dodge WMIs point to 3 countries of manufacture: the United States (1B4, 1B5, 1B6, 1B7…), Mexico (3B2, 3B4, 3B5, 3B6…) and Japan (JB3, JB4, JB7). 11 of them are shared with sister brands, so the WMI alone doesn't always tell you the make. vPIC registers Dodge WMIs for passenger car, suv / mpv, bus, incomplete vehicle and truck vehicle types.

The plant code (11th character) is defined by Dodge itself, and vPIC does not publish a list of them; the decoder above shows the plant city and country for any Dodge VIN.

Dodge model year codes

The 10th character gives the model year: a 2025 Dodge Hornet carries S, a 2023 Dodge Journey carries P and a 2017 Dodge Viper carries H. The letters repeat every 30 years.

Where to find the VIN on a Dodge

• On the dashboard, at the base of the windshield on the driver side (read it from outside).
• On the label in the driver-side door jamb.
• On the title, registration and insurance card.
• Often stamped on the engine bay firewall or the frame.
